Using hydraulic equipment, the bodies of the police officers were freed.

Early Monday morning, two members of the Policía Nacional Civil, PNC, lost their lives when they crashed into a horse on kilometer 17 of the road to El Salvador International Airport, near Santo Tomás.

Apparently, dense fog caused by the rain led to the traffic accident, preventing visibility of the animal they collided with; several other vehicles were also involved in the collision.

The PNC officers died instantly. They were identified as sub-inspectors Sonia Isable Ponce Cornejo and Godofredo Paredes Anzora. Both were heading to the Academia Nacional de Seguridad Pública to attend a course when they suffered the accident.

The specialized Vehicle Rescue Unit of Comandos de Salvamento was in charge of recovering the bodies, which had become trapped among the twisted metal, so that they could be identified by the authorities from Medicina Legal and Fiscalía.

Comandos de Salvamento asks the public to control speed limits, especially when it rains, as the roads become slippery and visibility is reduced.
