Early this morning, rescuers from Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador traveled to Kilometer 11 of the Northern Trunk Highway, where they were alerted about a person who had been run over.
Upon arriving at the scene, the volunteers confirmed that the elderly woman had lost her life after being run over beneath the pedestrian overpass located in the area by a trailer truck traveling to Guatemala City.
The driver of the trailer truck, which was transporting food, remained at the scene of the accident to establish responsibility.
In San Vicente, on the Pan-American Highway at approximately Kilometer 49, an elderly man was struck by a vehicle, leaving the older adult’s body at the side of the road, awaiting the authorities from Legal Medicine for the legally required identification.
According to FONAT statistics, through June of this year, the deaths of 218 pedestrians from being run over had been recorded. Some of these deaths were caused by people’s recklessness when they exposed themselves by crossing the roadways despite pedestrian overpasses existing in the area.
Therefore, Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador is calling on the public to use pedestrian overpasses to prevent deaths and injuries from being struck by vehicles. This is the case at the Parque Infantil pedestrian overpass, where people prefer to risk their lives rather than use the overhead crossing.
