Around eight o’clock Monday morning, members of the Renderos Barraza family, from Sacacoyo, La Libertad, arrived at Cantón Tonala to enjoy the waters of the Banderas River.
However, an hour later, the fun turned into an alarm when they saw that Maribela Abigail Renderos Barraza, 11, was swept away by the river’s current until she disappeared.
The minor’s relatives notified emergency responders so they could begin the search for her.
Members of the diving unit of Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador traveled with rescuers from the Comandos chapter in Sonsonate to begin the search efforts.
Other entities joined the search, including Protección Civil, Policía, Cuerpo de Bomberos and the army, to search the area of the Banderas River, located in Sonsonate.
However, at 3:00 p.m., the minor’s body was located, and it was determined that her death had been caused by asphyxiation due to immersion. Her body was therefore taken onto dry land for the legally required identification. The child’s mother, identified as Ana del Carmen Barraza García, thanked all the rescuers for their efforts to enable her daughter to be given a Christian burial.
