The desire to eat some mangoes nearly cost Mario Anderson Guardado Guzmán, 26, his life. Along with another friend, he was preparing to pick some mangoes on Holy Thursday afternoon in Colonia La Cima II of San Bartolo, Ilopango, but the branch broke, causing him to fall into a ravine approximately 15 meters deep.
Around five in the afternoon, a call alerted the Vertical Rescue Unit of Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador so that specialized personnel and equipment could be transported to rescue the victim.
Due to the difficult terrain where the victim had fallen, Comandos de Salvamento initially coordinated support from a helicopter belonging to the Salvadoran Air Force to recover the patient.
However, because nightfall was approaching, the operation was aborted, and he had to be brought out by land. For more than four hours, rescuers from Comandos de Salvamento struggled to get him onto solid ground in order to stabilize Mario Anderson and subsequently take him to a medical facility as an emergency.
