A new traffic accident was reported early this morning on kilometer 7 of the Carretera Troncal del Norte, in the direction from Apopa to San Salvador, where the driver of the vehicle lost control of his unit and collided with other cars parked along the side of the road.
Rescuers from Comandos de Salvamento arrived to assist the victim, who stated that he had lost control of his vehicle and crashed into others. The victim was identified as Edson Javier Duarte Arias, 26, who sustained trauma to various parts of his body, making it necessary to take him to a medical center.
Hours later, a pedestrian attempting to cross 11ª Calle Oriente was struck by a Route 22 bus. Comandos de Salvamento arrived at the scene of the accident, but the person was already showing no vital signs.
FONAT statistics state that, during the first six months of the year, more than 8,000 traffic accidents have been recorded, leaving more than 600 people dead. Of this figure, more than 200 people lost their lives after being struck by vehicles.
Comandos de Salvamento therefore ask drivers to respect traffic signs and speed limits, as well as yield to pedestrians. However, pedestrians are asked to use the footbridges, since on several occasions they have been struck beneath the overhead crossings provided to prevent them from becoming another victim of traffic accidents.
