José Antonio Gamero, a 52-year-old volunteer with Comandos de Salvamento, is a street vendor who for many years has devoted his free time to providing assistance during emergencies. He came close to dying early this morning while providing assistance at a traffic accident on Carretera de Oro, at kilometer 20 in the east-to-west lane.

Gamero, together with three other rescuers from Comandos de Salvamento and an agent from the Policía Nacional Civil, was covering the incident caused by a young driver who, under the influence of alcohol, had crashed into a telephone utility pole.

A cable was left crossing the roadway, which volunteers and police were proceeding to remove when a tractor-trailer was unable to stop, causing the wire to tighten and strike the rescuers and the PNC agent.

José Antonio Gamero was thrown into the air, and when he fell he suffered a fracture to his right arm and severe trauma to his left kneecap. He was initially admitted to Hospital Molina, where he was told that the orthopedist could see him only in mid-December, in order to operate on him in January.

However, a physician from the Alianza F.C. team of the Liga Mayor offered his services so that the rescuer could undergo surgery at another medical center today.

We thank colleagues and friends for the assistance provided to the 4 rescuers from Comandos de Salvamento who are now resting at home due to the injuries they suffered early this morning.

It is hoped that José Antonio Gamero will receive all the necessary consideration, since he will spend several days with his fracture, which will require a plate because of the severity of the injury.
