Manuel Medardo González Pérez, 20, lost his life Tuesday afternoon at El Espino Beach, where he had gone to visit relatives with his father and younger brother, who were enjoying the waters when they were surprised by a sea current.
Upon seeing what had happened, González Pérez ran to help his younger brother, who had already lost his strength, and managed to bring him to safety, but the current dragged Manuel Medardo out to sea, leaving him unable to get out.
From three in the afternoon, when he disappeared, brigades from Comandos de Salvamento of Alegría and Municipal Protección Civil joined forces to begin the young man’s search, an operation that lasted until around two in the morning this Wednesday.
In the morning hours, the search resumed, with the Policía Nacional Civil of Arcos del Espino, personnel from the Municipal Mayor’s Offices of Jucuarán and Alegría, Bomberos of Berlín, and the Red Cross of Usulután joining in; they covered several kilometers of beach.
At around one-thirty this Wednesday, the body was located near Cooperativa Roca Marina, at El Espino Beach.
Comandos de Salvamento of Alegría and the other agencies brought him onto firm ground so that judicial and police authorities could carry out the legally required recognition and turn him over to his relatives, who had always supported the search for the young Manuel Medardo, who gave his life to save that of his younger brother.
